Sheffield Wednesday earned a huge three points at home vs Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, though midfielder John Buckley was ineligible to play.
Sheffield Wednesday remain in last place of the Championship table. But after a strong week which saw the Owls take a point against Leicester City and all three against Blackburn, there’s a new sense of belief around the club.
The performance vs Leicester was arguably the best we’ve seen this season, but that was trumped by the performance and 3-1 win against Blackburn Rovers.
Wednesday looked like a new team, with a fearsome attacking line lead by youngster Bailey Cadamarteri who opened the scoring with his first professional goal for the club.
John Buckley tells Blackburn players what to expect
Buckley joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan from Blackburn Rovers on deadline day in the summer.
It’s since been a tough spell for the midfielder who’s been in and out of the team so far, having now not started a game since the Owls travelled down to Plymouth Argyle in October.
But speaking to Lancashire Telegraph after Blackburn lost away at Hillsborough, scorer Sammie Szmodics revealed that Buckley told his Rovers teammates that this Wednesday side, despite their league position, is a strong one.
Szmodics revealed:
“We spoke to John Buckley, he told us how good a team it is. It’s my first time at Hillsborough and it’s a massive stadium, the crowd get behind them and it’s a tough place to go as an opposition player. Maybe we deserved more from the game but we’re disappointed with how it finished.”
Sheffield Wednesday on the up
Judging by the last two performances, Sheffield Wednesday are in a false league position.
They’ve gone up against two of the best in the league and come out with four points, so Danny Rohl will know for sure that his current set of players are capable of staying in the Championship.
Now, it’s simply about putting points on the board.
It’s still a mountain to climb for Sheffield Wednesday and more huge performances are needed to even give the players a fighting chance of survival.
But there’s wind in their sails now, and Buckley will want to prove a point ahead of January with a potential return to Blackburn Rovers on the cards.
