Jamal Lowe lit up Hillsborough on his Sheffield Wednesday debut yesterday.

The Jamaican was pushed into the No.9 role due to Ike Ugbo’s absence, but pulled it off spectacularly as he netted his first goal on the half hour mark.

Lowe also nodded down the ball that Plymouth Argyle converted into their own net to double the lead early into the second half.

The attacker played the full 90 minutes as he made 32 touches, completed nine passes, had three shots and won four tackles.

Sheffield Wednesday went onto claim a comfortable 4-0 win over the Pilgrims in their Championship opener.

Lowe has since been showered in praise for his performance, with footballers across the country showing their support on his Instagram page.

Lowe receives heartfelt messages from former teammates

The 30-year-old shared a series of matchday photos on his social media, accompanied by the caption: “First game @ home. Thank you for the support #GoalsLikeJamz.”

Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur players were some of the many stars that sent messages to the attacker.

Charlie Patino, who spent last season on loan with Lowe at Swansea City, wrote: “Uncs.”

Dominic Solanke, who was with Lowe at Bournemouth, said: “Goals!”

Everton and former QPR loanee Tim Iroegbunam wrote sent two flame emojis.

Chelsea and ex-Swansea loanee Bashir Humpreys said: “Expected.”

Lowe also received plenty of support from his current teammates, with Barry Bannan writing: “Man like…” followed by two flame emojis.

Josh Windass wrote: “Class jam.”

Anthony Musaba sent two clapping emojis.

Lowe will be one of Sheffield Wednesday’s best signings

Humphreys’ point of Lowe’s goal being expected is pretty bang on, given his previous record in the Championship.

The forward was a completely risk-free signing, made even better by the fact that the Owls didn’t have to pay a penny.

Lowe picked up 12 goal contributions for the Swans last term, spending most of it out wide. He has also racked up 52 goal contributions in 187 games in the Championship across his career and has won promotion on two occasions.

Lowe was exactly the kind of signing Wednesday needed to bring together the likes of Yan Valery, Svante Ingelsson and Olaf Kobacki, who had no or very little experience in the UK.

He will be a vital player for Danny Rohl going forward and it will be interesting to see where he is played – or who is dropped – when Ugbo returns.
