Sheffield Wednesday look set to add Chris Powell to Danny Rohl’s backroom team.
Sheffield Wednesday have a new manager in Rohl, and a new-look backroom team with a handful of new faces having arrived alongside Rohl.
The likes of Sascha Lense has already joined, whilst highly-rated Danish boss Henrik Pedersen is also reportedly set to arrive, and now it looks like Powell will be joining too.
The 54-year-old had a playing career lasting 23 years with his time at Charlton Athletic perhaps being what he was most remenebred for.
Powell though has since earned a strong reputation in coaching having recently worked with Gareth Southgate at the Qatar World Cup, and having then worked with Spurs after that.
Powell has also had spells as a manager at Charlton Athletic, Huddersfield Town, and Southend United.
And giving his verdict on Powell to Sheffield Wednesday, journalist Rob Staton spoke highly of the move, saying:
“You can bring in a good technical team, who Danny Rohl has worked with before, that he feels comfortable with, that have got the CVs, that have got the reputations having worked at places like Red Bull Leipzig, a top, top club in Europe, but you just need that extra bit of nouse as well, somebody who knows the division, somebody who knows the players, somebody who is an expert in English football, and Chris Powell; he’s not just some random coach or some ex-player who fancies a go at this, this is someone who’s been in the hot seat, who’s been a manager in English football.
“This is someone who’s worked at top, top clubs. This is someone who’s been an England international as a player, and then most recently was coaching with England at the World Cup. And then when he left that role he joined Tottenham Hotspur. So he has got a fantastic coaching pedigree, he knows his stuff.”
Staton added:
“When this is announced and when this is finalised, this will be a big move.”
‘A big move’ for Sheffield Wednesday…
If bringing in a highly-regarded coach in Rohl wasn’t enough, Sheffield Wednesday look set to add another reputable coach in Powell.
And like Staton says, this is a big move for Wednesday and fans will want to see this one get over the line sooner rather than later.
Credit must go to Dejphon Chansiri for the amalgamation of this backroom team. But still, he has a lot to make up for.
Rohl certainly has a massive task ahead of him and he’ll need a good backroom behind him to give his side a fighting chance this season.
But with names like Lense and Powell in the staff, Rohl’s Sheffield Wednesday could yet achieve survival this season.
