Di’Shon Bernard has proved a decent signing for Sheffield Wednesday and yesterday he starred for Jamaica. The Reggae Boys defeated Haiti 3-2 and the central defender was in fine form at centre-back.
The 23-year-old signed for the Owls on a free transfer during the summer transfer window. He joined from Manchester United and will finally put some roots down after loan spells with Portsmouth and Hull.
Bernard has now played six times for Jamaica and he’s doing his chances of more caps no harm at all. The youngster is clearly reaping the rewards of regular football at Hillsborough too following nine outings this term.
Bernard stars in Jamaica win
It was a performance to be proud of for Bernard as they sent Haiti packing on their own pitch. Goals from Demarai Gray, Shamar Nicholson and Leon Bailey saw the team home in the CONCACAF Nations League.
It was the performance of Bernard that Wednesday fans will be most interested in, however. According to Sofa Score, he did very well and made five clearances during the contest as Jamaica held on for a win.
Bernard was also strong in the tackle. He won four ground duels and also won two headers during his 90 minutes on the pitch.
The player’s passing wasn’t too bad either. He completed 35 of his 46 attempted passes with a success ratio of around 76%.
Bernard can star under Danny Rohl at Wednesday
International football will be parked for Bernard now after the latest win for Jamaica. His focus for the short term will be getting back to Hillsborough and impressing his new manager ahead of Saturday.
Bernard fits the profile of a youngster that Rohl will fancy working with. There is a lot of potential still to be unearthed in the defender and the German coach will fancy getting it out of him.
Given that he’s largely been a regular fixture in the team this season, it’s likely that he will get plenty of opportunities to impress the new boss and prove he deserves to be a regular starter for Wednesday.
