A former Sheffield Wednesday star believes he is in the ‘best’ form of his life after leaving Hillsborough.
Sheffield Wednesday have struggled for prolific goal-scorers in recent years, with Michael Smith the only player to score over 15 goals in the last eleven seasons.
The Owls have had their fair share of struggling strikers, with Ashley Fletcher‘s zero goals in 25 appearances definitely one of the worst.
Another signing that proved to be somewhat underwhelming was Jordan Rhodes, who spent four seasons at Hillsborough.
Rhodes had scored 37 goals in the Championship in two seasons prior to his move to Sheffield Wednesday on loan. The forward earned himself a permanent move to the Owls after netting only three goals, before going onto score a further 17 goals in all competitions before he was sold in 2021.
After another disappointing spell in the Championship with Huddersfield Town, the 34-year-old signed for Blackpool in the summer. He has now bagged 15 goals and provided three assists in 29 games for the Seasiders – playing in what he believes is the ‘best’ form of his career.
Speaking to the Blackpool Gazette, Rhodes said: “My form this season has been one of my best in my career.
“At the stage of my career, with me being a father of three kids, it’s nice to have my family at the home games, supporting Blackpool, wearing the kits, and having a smile on my face whenever I’m on the pitch. Having them at the games, enjoying watching as much as I do playing, gives me great pride and fulfilment.
“I’ve enjoyed my time at Blackpool so far. There is a great group of lads here, with an excellent coaching staff. It’s a family-run club and the collective spirit has been there from the start, and I can’t say enough of the good things with how I’ve been treated by the club, and I’m sure the players would say the same thing about their experience.”
Were Sheffield Wednesday crazy to splash the cash on Jordan Rhodes?
Jordan Rhodes was brilliant during his time at Blackburn Rovers, but never really proved himself as a top Championship striker in the years that followed.
The attacker remains as the Owls’ most expensive signing in history, having coughed up a whopping £10 million, despite his poor return during his loan spell.
It’s good to see Rhodes finally finding some form after a difficult stage of his career, though it would be a surprise to see him find more success is Blackpool were to return to the second tier.
As for Sheffield Wednesday, they will surely avoid making such a mistake again. Paying £10m for him even in his prime seems like a questionable decision.
