Wednesday felt at one stage that they’d agreed a deal to sign Coventry – but he decided to choose a move to Charlton instead, ending his association with West Ham.
The Owls haven’t dwelled on it for too long, although another central midfielder would have been an ideal addition during the January transfer window.
Now, Gabriel Sutton who is considered an expert when it comes to the EFL has had his say about Coventry after watching him help Charlton beat Cheltenham 3-1.
He said on Twitter: “Conor Coventry is such a class act in midfield. Reminds me of Michael Carrick.”
Wednesday-linked Coventry has become an integral part of the Charlton team under Nathan Jones and it always felt like he’d be a useful signing for League One.
The 23-year-old actually made 10 appearances for the West Ham senior team and it was somewhat surprising when he opted for a move to the Addicks instead of Wednesday.

It’s very unlikely that Charlton will be gatecrashing the play-offs this season and that will mean some interest in their players in the summer.
They might have only just signed Coventry but if the right bid is made, he could still find himself on the move again.
With that in mind, Wednesday should continue to keep an eye on the midfielder and his exploits with Charlton.
Right now, the Owls are flying and last night’s 1-0 win over Plymouth has moved them level with points with the four teams directly above them.
Coventry might be viewed as one that got away from Wednesday during the January transfer window.
In fairness, the club couldn’t have done anything else, with the player seemingly determined to remain in the capital.
However, the scouting team will likely be wondering what might have been and it would be no surprise for the Republic of Ireland international to remain on the radar.
