Danny Rohl has told the media exactly what he said to referee Anthony Backhouse after Sheffield Wednesday’s defeat to Coventry City.
Sheffield Wednesday made it two defeats on the bounce as they were beaten by Coventry on home soil yesterday afternoon.
Ben Sheaf’s brace was enough to claim all three points for the visitors, while Josh Windass‘ second-half goal proved to be only a consolation as he made it four goals in his last seven games for The Owls.
The result didn’t appear to be the focus of the fans’ criticism though, with ’embarrassing‘ Anthony Backhouse subject to plenty of boos at half-time and full-time.
The official handed out nine yellow cards at Hillsborough, while Chris Powell was also booked for his complaints after a first half foul on Ashley Fletcher went ignored.
Danny Rohl was eager to let his feelings known after 90 minutes was up, engaging in a long conversation with Backhouse as he attempted to depart the pitch.
The German has since explained what he told the referee. Speaking to BBC Sheffield (as per The Star), Rohl said: “After the game there is always emotion. In the first half some situations were maybe 50-50 and there was more of one side getting a little bit of an advantage.
“This is what I told him but this is the decision from the ref, I have to accept it. In this case I want to say something in this direction. I said it after the game, it’s OK, we go forward.”
Can Sheffield Wednesday still escape relegation?
It was a tough defeat to take for Sheffield Wednesday, whose chances of climbing out of the relegation zone are slipping through their fingers once again.
The Owls now sit five points from safety, after previously looking like they were set for safety after winning five of their eight games over the festive period.
Coventry have gone unbeaten in their last ten games in all competitions though and it was always going to be a very tough match – especially when they clearly didn’t have the referee to make it a fair game.
Danny Rohl’s side will face the Sky Blues for the third time in a month this weekend as they host Mark Robins’ side once again in the FA Cup, before facing another tricky test in Watford next week.
Sheffield Wednesday have a number of difficult opponents coming up, but they are going to need to start picking up some points if they don’t want safety to drift away from them again.
