Sheffield Wednesday have been hailed for their ‘fight’ after beating Bristol City at the weekend.
After picking up two clean sheets in previous wins over Birmingham City and Millwall, Sheffield Wednesday were made to work a bit harder for the three points this time round.
Ike Ugbo opened the scoring with a brilliant turn and finish early on, however Jason Knight fought back with an equaliser ten minutes later.
The Owls weren’t settling for a draw at half-time though, with a shot from Marvin Johnson on the edge of the box helped on by the head of Ugbo to gift the hosts the lead and also take the striker’s tally up to five goals.
Despite a red card for Di’Shon Bernard in the second half, Danny Rohl‘s side managed to hold on to claim an important victory at Hillsborough.
Following the game, The Star journalist Joe Crann posted a highlights video of the two goals to share his delight.
Ugbo’s opener was followed by every single player celebrating in style, while his second resulted in Pol Valentin dropping to his knees in excitement.
Crann has praised the team’s ‘fight’, captioning the video: “Just so much good in here… The goals are great, the celebrations are ace, and seeing Pol Valentin drop to his knees when the second goes in is just further proof of the fight in this #SWFC group.”
What has changed?
Sheffield Wednesday have looked like a completely different team in recent weeks and are really starting to hold their own.
Unexpected heroes such as Pol Valentin and Michael Ihiekwe are forming an much-improved backline, while the Owls’ attack looks so much more creative, exciting and full of ideas compared to the team that had previously struggled to find the back of the net.
A lot of these players hadn’t played for Sheffield Wednesday before this season and many others are just on loan, but it is quite clear how much they all care about the club and are desperate to do well and please their supporters.
The hard work and determination can often contribute a lot more to a team’s success than their quality and that is certainly benefiting them here.
The two upcoming fixtures against Rotherham and Plymouth are massive for Rohl’s side and they really need to be collecting maximum points there to take them out of the relegation zone, before a tough run of meetings with Leeds United and Ipswich could cause them some problems.
