Sheffield Wednesday made it back-to-back wins after a 1-0 victory at Stoke City yesterday, with one man standing out yet again.
Sheffield Wednesday continued on their fine vein of form with an impressive, hard-fought 1-0 win away at Stoke City in the Championship yesterday.
Anthony Musaba netted a late winner for Danny Rohl’s side who have won their last two and are unbeaten in three.
And yesterday’s win even lifts them off the bottom of the table for the first time since Rohl arrived at the club, with safety now just eight points away.
Sheffield Wednesday had to dig deep yesterday, and once again, midfielder Will Vaulks stole the headlines.
Will Vaulks ‘dominant’ in Stoke City win
Vaulks wasn’t a regular starter when Rohl first arrived.
But he’s started the last four now and has arguably become the Owls’ most important player with yet another standout performance yesterday.
As per Sofascore, Vaulks won more duels than anyone on the pitch (11), attempted more aerial duels than anyone (8 with 5 won), completed the second-most passes of any Wednesday player (31), made more interceptions than any of his teammates (4) and the joint-most amount of tackles too (4).
After the game, The Star gave Vaulks a 9/10 rating, with journalist Joe Crann adding:
“Another dominant performance in the heart of the Wednesday midfield for the Owls destroyer. Won lots of duels and tried to drive Wednesday on when the game was lacking tempo.”
Sheffield Wednesday up and running under Rohl
Sheffield Wednesday look like a completely different side to what they did before Rohl came in, and the fact that it’s the same set of players tells us that Rohl is the difference.
Whilst a huge amount of praise should go Rohl’s way, Vaulks also deserves a huge amount of credit.
He’s bided his time and took his chance when Rohl put him in, and now it’s difficult to see a Sheffield Wednesday XI without Vaulks bossing the midfield.
The Welshman is proving himself to be an all-round midfielder who can do everything; tackle, pass, cover ground and so on.
He’s become a vital player for the Owls and his teammates have really stepped up in recent weeks as well.
Up next for Sheffield Wednesday is an away game vs Norwich City in midweek.
The Canaries are solidifying after a rocky patch of form. But David Wagner’s side are very beatable and so Sheffield Wednesday should back themselves to put in another good performance at Carrow Road on Wednesday night.
