Sheffield Wednesday beat Rotherham United 1-0 in the Championship today, though the game wasn’t without its controversy.
Sheffield Wednesday journeyed to Rotherham for a South Yorkshire derby with Rotherham United this afternoon.
The Owls headed to the New York Stadium looking to build on a 2-1 win at home to Bristol City last time out, with Danny Rohl‘s side having won three of their last four in the league.
Rotherham United meanwhile were looking to end a run of six-straight defeats before today, with the Millers having just one league win to their name since October.
Offside controversy in first half of Rotherham United vs Sheffield Wednesday
Sheffield Wednesday dominated the first half, having 11 shots compared to Rotherham’s 1 (Sofascore).
Rotherham could barely get out of their own half, yet they somehow went into the break on level terms.
But many will say that the Owls should’ve been in front after Akin Famewo headed home a curling Will Vaulks free-kick, only for the goal to be ruled offside.
Famewo’s immediate reaction suggested that he knew he was onside, and images surfacing after the game suggest that he was as well.

And giving her verdict on the incident, Crann posted:
Sheffield Wednesday went on to score on the second half through Ike Ugbo; the Canadian international finished off a neat Wednesday move, having now scored six in eight league games for the Owls.
The Owls remains in 23rd place of the Championship table and three points from safety after Stoke City and QPR both picked up wins.
Owls hard done by in Rotherham win
All is well that ends well. But the game was much tougher than it should’ve been.
If Wednesday hadn’t scored in the second half and went on to draw the game, then they’d now be five points adrift after another weekend of wins in the bottom half of the table.
And that would’ve given Sheffield Wednesday absolute reason to be frustrated at the officiating with Famewo’s goal looking like it was definitely onside.

There will continue to be cries for VAR in the Football League but right now it doesn’t seem feasible, or affordable for a lot of teams in the Football League.
But Wednesday got the win in the end and it’s another huge win too, with QPR winning away at Leicester City and Stoke City picking up a much-needed win over Middlesbrough too.
Up next for the Owls is a home game vs Plymouth Argyle this weekend.
