Xisco Munoz says Mallik Wilks could potentially make his first appearance of the season v Mansfield Town tonight.

Sheffield Wednesday host League Two side Mansfield Town in the Carabao Cup tonight.

The Owls overcame Stockport County in the opening round of the competition earlier in the month, in what remains the only game in which they’ve avoided defeat this season.

Munoz’s men fell to another defeat in the Championship on Saturday, losing 2-1 away at Cardiff City – they remain the only side in the league without a point on the board this season.

But the Owls boss has suggested he could field a strong line up tonight and he also revealed that attacking Wilks could potentially make his return to the side.

Munoz said of the 24-year-old:

“Mallik is in the adapting process so we’ll see if the doctor gives me the okay for him for the next game. But he is working very hard. We will see.”

Wilks was on the bench for the opening game v Southampton, but he’s been missing from the side since through injury.

A welcome return for Wednesday…

Wilks has had his share of injuries since joining Sheffield Wednesday from Hull City in 2022. But he showed at Hull City that he’s a player who can really provide goals and attacking threat and if he can maintain fitness, he’ll be a key player for the Owls.

He’s yet to really kick on for the club and Munoz will slowly reintroduce him to the side; potentially against Mansfield tonight which Wednesday will see as a must-win, confidence-building type of game.

It’ll be a tough one but Wednesday should have enough quality to get through this one, and try to build some kind of form before they return to league duties against Leeds United this weekend.
