One Sheffield Wednesday has been praised for his ‘huge performance’ against QPR.
Sheffield Wednesday received plenty of plaudits yesterday after claiming a 2-0 win at Loftus Road.
The victory takes them to within one point of safety again, having taken only a point from their previous four games.
It was Djeidi Gassama who hit the headlines for his display, picking up a goal and an assist after coming on for the injured Ian Poveda on the half hour mark.
However, he definitely wasn’t the only one who deserved praise for their performance against QPR.
One player who perhaps hasn’t stood out too many times this season is Bambo Diaby, who made his third consecutive start for Sheffield Wednesday.
The defender has been in and out of the starting line-up this season since joining in the summer, often being criticised for his ‘iffy’ performances. In fact, it was only a few of months ago that he was labelled ‘shocking’ after the 4-0 defeat to Southampton.
A ‘huge’ performance from big Bambo
Diaby is back in the team now though due to Di’Shon Bernard’s injury, and journalist Joe Crann has highlighted his performance.
After the centre-back took to social media to thank the supporters, Crann responded with: “Huge performance from big Bambo today.”
Journalist Alex Miller also gave Diaby an 8 rating in The Star, writing: “Had a job on his hands trying to deal with Sinclair Armstrong, but persevered with it brilliantly and was a rock at the back for Wednesday. Used his strength to excellent effect time and time again.”
How important can Diaby be now?
Sofascore awarded him one of the highest ratings for the Owls, with his stats really backing up the praise.
Diaby made 43 touches, had 86% passing accuracy, 70% duels won, and made one clearance, two interceptions and five tackles.
He was brilliant in defence and looked so much better than he has in previous matches in the Championship.
While Bernard could be set to return soon, if Diaby can play like that again then there is no reason why Danny Rohl won’t try and fit both in the backline.
Like Gassama, the defender has picked a great time to start pulling out stellar performances like he did yesterday.
He could now play a key role in keeping Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship next season.
