A number of Sheffield Wednesday fans want a fomer Newcastle United manager to succeed Steve Bruce if the Owls boss leaves for St James’ Park.
According to the Sun Newacstle are ready to make an official approach for Bruce, who is now the Magpies’ ‘top target’.
The newspaper claims the north-east native would ‘jump at the chance’ to lead his boyhood club, with his Wednesday assistants, Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence, ‘likely to follow’.
And it adds that the Premier League club are ‘willing to pay’ the compensation figure required to free Bruce from his one-year rolling contract – ‘thought to be no more than £1 million’.
Sheffield Wednesday have enjoyed an impressive turnaround in Bruce’s near six-month reign and few of an Owls persuasion would be anything but loathed to lose him.

But if the 58-year-old was to leave, there is at least one obvious candidate to replace him – according to the following Wednesdayites on Twitter…

If Bruce wants to go, hope chansiri doesn’t faf around. Take the compo and get someone in sharpish. Either go like for like with hughton, gamble on stendel or go the derby route and become John Terry’s owls, get some attention on the club again #swfc

£10M in comps and he’s yours. Sorts out FFP. Someone pass Hughton’s phone number on to Chansiri #swfc https://t.co/eax3R9zKyo

If Bruce goes, it has to be Hughton as number one target and failing that, Rowett. Either way wouldn’t expect too much this season #swfc

Hughton, who is available after leaving Brighton and Hove Albion earlier in the summer, led the Seagulls to promotion two years ago, having done likewise with Newcastle at the start of the decade.
