Sheffield Wednesday fans appear to have delivered a unanimous verdict on reports linking the Owls with Middlesbrough’s Stewart Downing.
The Yorkshire Evening Post lists Wednesday among the clubs hoping to sign the former England winger after Boro confirmed his release.

The Owls are expected to strengthen their wide midfield options this summer after losing Marco Matias and Rolando Aarons.
But the Wednesday boss Steve Bruce has repeatedly stressed the need for younger, hungrier and quicker players at Hillsborough next season.

That would surely rule out Downing, for all the 34-year-old’s experience.
And these Wednesdayites are hoping that’s the case…
Far to old. Midfield slow already, needs some zip & energy.

Its a No from me too. Signing these type of players is one of the reason why we still remain in this league. Lost his pace and bound to be more injury prone. Get some young uns in with enthusiasm and hungry for it.

35 in July. No pace, very few assists and goals in the last few seasons. Can’t wait. #OnOurWayOnOurWay

Please God no… If we want an ageing winger we could go for John Barnes or John Robertson or even bring back the Patron Saint of Skill Chris Waddle…

NO! Too old, probably get injured, High wages. Haven’t we learnt our lesson yet?

All six of the Sheffield Wednesday players released this summer are over the age of 30, leaving Bruce with a fresher base to work from this summer.
Only Keiren Westwood (34), Steven Fletcher (32) and Kieran Lee (30) are not aged 29 or younger at the time of writing.
