'Get in there': Some Wednesdayites urge Owls to sign free agent ex-Pulis target who once cost £26m

Some Sheffield Wednesday supporters want their side to do what their rivals Barnsley seemingly could not.

According to The Sun, Barnsley held talks to sign the former Liverpool and Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli after Brescia cancelled his contract.

But it is claimed that despite initial interest from both sides, Balotelli’s enthusiasm to play in the Championship has since cooled.

And with the 30-year-old no longer bound for Oakwell, or so it would seem, the following Owls fans are pushing for a move of their own regardless…

Balotelli’s career has recently tailed off despite its early success, which saw him win domestic and European titles at Inter Milan and lift Premier League and FA Cup titles at City after a £26 million transfer.

But it was only last season that he was playing Serie A football, after productive spells at Nice and Marseille, post-Liverpool.

And his goalscoring record – more than 150 in fewer than 400 senior appearances – stacks up.

How Wednesday could do with some goals of their own right now, especially amid the striker shortage to which Tony Pulis alluded at his unveiling as Owls boss on Monday.

Interestingly, Pulis was credited with an interest in Balotelli while at West Bromwich Albion, by the Italian website Calciomercato.

Even so, we certainly wouldn’t bet on the Owls being Balotelli’s next club – which could be a shame, since Italian attackers tend to be well received at Hillsborough.
