Gary Hooper spotted outside home of European giants as freed Sheffield Wednesday striker hints at imminent move

The former Sheffield Wednesday striker Gary Hooper had reached a final agreement to join the Iranian side, Esteghlal, according to the Tasnim News Agency.

But it was a different club’s stadium of which Hooper posted footage on his Instagram story earlier this morning (Tuesday).

The 31-year-old, who was released by Wednesday within hours of the Owls’ 2018-19 season ending, appears to be staying in a hotel opposite Istanbul’s Vodafone Arena, home of Besiktas JK.

Whether or not Hooper is bound for the Turkish giants instead remains to be seen.

But the popular player did tag the football agent, Alexander Levack, in his post, which hints that a move could be imminent.

Joining Besiktas, who are competing in this season’s Europa League, would be some switch for Hooper, having recently held talks with Bristol City.

The former Celtic hero also sat out all but six weeks of his final 18 months as a Sheffield Wednesday player through injury.

And there remains a strong possibility that Hooper is simply passing through Istanbul en route to Tehran, where Esteghlal are based.

Hooper, who is said to have earned around £30,000-a-week at Sheffield Wednesday after joining in a £3 million deal in January 2016, was also seen in the Ukrainian city, Odesa, last month.
