One of Sheffield Wednesday’s summer transfer targets is joining their next opponents, Watford, according to the journalist Alan Nixon.

Lancashire Live reported on Thursday that Wednesday had made an offer for the Manchester United midfielder, James Garner.

And it was claimed that both Blackburn Rovers and Swansea City also had bids on the table for Garner, whose proposed moves to Huddersfield Town and Coventry City had fallen through.

Nevertheless, it is Watford who have won the race for the 19-year-old, according to Nixon.

Wednesday are not short of bodies in central midfield, with Barry Bannan, Massimo Luongo, Izzy Brown, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Joey Pelupessy and Alex Hunt among those currently vying for places.

But Garner, who has featured on seven occasions for the Manchester United first team, would have arguably improved on several of those options.

Should the Birkenhead native indeed join Watford, it will be his first taste of football away from Manchester United.

It remains to be seen if Garner, who is typically deployed as a deep-lying playmaker and boasts a good range of passing as well as a keen eye for goal, will be signed in time to face Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Saturday.
