The Derby County striker Jack Marriott is the latest player with whom Sheffield Wednesday are being associated ahead of Friday’s 5pm deadline for domestic transfers.

The journalist Alan Nixon claims Marriott is being discussed, among others, as a loan option for the Owls.

Wednesday have long been linked with the West Bromwich Albion striker Kenneth Zohore, but Nixon states that particular move ‘seems to be too difficult for a couple of reasons’, ‘cost being the main one’.

He adds that Lee Gregory of Stoke City is another name in the Hillsborough air, corroborating earlier reports.

Marriott was listed as a Wednesday target prior to joining Derby in a £3 million deal from Peterborough United two years ago, but the Owls had an abundance of options at the time.

The 26-year-old has since scored 18 goals in 87 games for Derby, but only three of those arrived last season and he is now in the final year of his contract at Pride Park – although the Rams may have an option in their favour.

Like Gregory, he also comes from a family of Sheffield United supporters.
